A book needs steady, consistent reads that arrive on deadline, and the risky part shows up after chapter three: tone shifts, mic sound drifts, and correction notes turn into a second full recording pass. This audiobook narrator contract gives that job a written lane, so the recording plan, payment triggers, and limits get agreed before the first chapters go out.

The contract starts by tying the narration and home-studio recording to the accepted proposal, then spells out what gets recorded from the approved manuscript and what gets delivered with the finished chapter audio. Payment terms sit in plain language, including the 25% booking invoice, the remaining 75% on handover, and what happens when an invoice runs late, and the page reads in brick red with verdigris accents under Raleway headings and Inter body text. The later sections handle changes and pickups, ownership of finished narration versus working files, portfolio excerpts after release, and what counts as a fix versus what falls outside scope.

  • Audiobook narration and home-studio recording States the contract applies alongside the accepted proposal and requires written agreement before any change gets priced or scheduled.
  • What I’ll record Defines the manuscript and tone reference the recording follows, explains per-finished-hour rounding, and lists the deliverables you’re committing to.
  • Payment Sets the 25% booking invoice and 75% on delivery, the 14-day due window, and the pause on recording or delivery if payments fall overdue.
  • Changes and pickups Includes one consolidated round of pickups, then prices extra rounds separately, including manuscript updates and notes sent in batches.
  • Ending the project Explains how either side can end in writing, what gets paid for or refunded, and what gets delivered if the narrator ends the work.

Once the contract is in Plutio, you replace names, dates, and rates, then send it for online signature. When the client signs, both sides have the same reference for deliveries, pickups, payment timing, and what gets handed over if the project ends early.

We went from spending hours on every proposal to creating fully customized ones in under 5 minutes. That's not an exaggeration - we timed it.

What to include in an audiobook narrator contract

PartWhat it covers

Audiobook narration and home-studio recording. It

Ties the contract to the accepted proposal and says changes get priced and scheduled before any extra work starts, with both sides agreeing in writing.

What I’ll record

Defines the approved manuscript, the consistent studio setup, and the deliverables, including what needs to be provided up front so exports stay consistent.

Payment

Explains the 25% booking invoice, the remaining balance on handover, the 14-day payment window, and the pause on work when an invoice runs late.

Changes and pickups

Spells out the included pickups round and what counts as extra, then says extra notes get quoted and confirmed in writing before recording begins.

Who owns what

Gives the client ownership of the finished narration after final payment, while keeping working files and recording settings with the narrator unless agreed separately.

Portfolio use

Allows short excerpts after release for portfolio use, and explains how to request privacy or a longer holdback in writing.

Problems and limits

Defines what the narrator fixes by re-recording and replacing audio, and what falls outside responsibility, like manuscript issues or platform requirements.

Ending the project

Covers written notice, the agreed stopping point, what gets paid for, what gets refunded if overpaid, and what gets handed over if the narrator ends the project, with a signature at the end.

Who it is for

Audiobook narrators working from a home studio, and authors or publishers hiring audiobook narration for a full title with chapter-by-chapter delivery and pickups.

The contract in full

Audiobook narration and home-studio recording.

It applies alongside the proposal you’ve accepted. If anything needs to change once we’re underway, I’ll price and schedule it first, and I’ll only move ahead once we’ve both agreed in writing.

What I’ll record

I’ll narrate and record your audiobook from the manuscript you approve at intake, using a consistent home-studio setup and the tone reference I capture at the start. Per-finished-hour narration is priced on the final runtime you receive, based on the finished audio length, rounded up to the next 15 minutes.

What you get for this project is listed below. If you need a specific file naming pattern, sample rate, or delivery method, send it before I export the first chapters so the whole book stays consistent.

* Finished chapter audio * Room-tone matched pickups * Pronunciation list * Tone reference clip * Retail sample (5 minutes) * Session notes summary

Payment

To book your dates, I invoice 25% of the total when the proposal is signed. I start work once that booking invoice is paid. I invoice the remaining 75% when I hand over the finished work for this project.

Each invoice is payable within 14 days of its date. If a payment is late, I pause any in-progress recording, editing, pickups, or final delivery until the account is back up to date. If a deadline is tied to your release calendar, tell me early. I can usually hold my schedule, but I can’t keep recording while an invoice is overdue.

Changes and pickups

One pickups and corrections round is included, based on one consolidated set of notes from you. That round covers performance tweaks, misreads, and small fixes, and I’ll match room tone and mic sound to the original chapters.

Anything beyond that included round is billed separately. This includes new or rewritten lines, changes caused by a manuscript update after recording starts, or notes delivered in multiple batches that require me to reset the session more than once. When I receive extra notes, I’ll quote the cost and confirm a delivery date in writing before I record any additional pickups.

Who owns what

Once the final invoice is paid, you own the finished narration I delivered for this project. You can use it in the audiobook and in normal marketing for the title, including retailer samples and ads that use excerpts.

I keep ownership of my working files, templates, booth settings, processing chain, and any test recordings I make to build the voice palette and tone reference. Those pieces are how I keep long books consistent, and I don’t hand them over unless we agree that separately in writing. I don’t release, resell, or license your finished audio to anyone else without your written approval.

Portfolio use

After the audiobook is released, I may use short excerpts from the finished work as part of my portfolio, such as on my website, a private link for casting, or a reel. I’ll keep it to material that represents the final sound and won’t post anything that would reasonably substitute for the audiobook itself.

If you need the project kept private, or you want a longer hold back because of an exclusive, tell me and email it in writing. I’ll follow that request. If your title hasn’t released yet, I won’t post excerpts before launch unless you ask me to.

Problems and limits

I’m responsible for delivering the narration I’ve agreed to, recorded cleanly from my home booth, with consistent tone and mic sound across chapters. If something I deliver is wrong because of my performance, an obvious technical fault, or a missed line, my fix is to re-record and replace the affected audio.

I’m not responsible for problems caused by the manuscript you approved, late or conflicting pronunciation notes, or changes made after I’ve started recording. I’m also not responsible for distribution decisions, platform requirements, or retailer rejections. If a platform has a specific spec sheet, send it at intake and I’ll work to it.

Ending the project

Either of us can end the project by giving notice in writing. In that message, we’ll agree the finish point for any in-progress chapter so nothing is left half-built.

If you end the project, you’ll pay for the work I’ve completed up to the end date, including any chapters already recorded or edited and any agreed pickups already done. If you’ve already paid more than that amount, I’ll refund the difference. If I end the project, I’ll hand over any finished chapter audio you’ve paid for, along with the tone reference clip and session notes I’ve created so far. Unpaid work is not delivered.
