Could not authenticate with provided details
This error appears when connecting a custom email account (IMAP/SMTP) and the password is rejected.
If you're using Gmail or Google Workspace
Google doesn't allow regular passwords for IMAP connections. You need to:
- Enable 2-step verification on your Google account.
- Generate an App Password at myaccount.google.com/apppasswords.
- Use the App Password (not your regular Google password) when connecting your email.
- Make sure IMAP is enabled in your Gmail settings under Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
If you're using another provider
Most providers that require two-factor authentication also require an App Password or API key instead of your regular login password. Check your provider's documentation for how to generate one.
Common causes
- Using your regular password instead of an App Password
- IMAP is turned off in your email settings
- Two-factor authentication is enabled but no App Password was generated
- The password was recently changed
