Custom fields configuration
Custom fields let you add your own data points to any area. A project can carry a "Client Industry" dropdown, an invoice can store a "PO Number" text field, and a contact can track a "Lead Source" selection. You'll configure all of them from Settings > Custom fields.
How to create a custom field
- Go to Settings > Custom fields.
- Select the area you want the field on (projects, tasks, invoices, proposals, contracts, and contacts).
- Click "Add field" to open the field configuration panel.
- Enter a name for the field (e.g., "PO Number" or "Client Industry").
- Choose the field type from the available options (text, dropdown, date, checkbox, and more types listed below).
- Configure type-specific settings. For dropdown and multi-select fields, add your predefined options. For currency fields, set the currency format. For slider and range fields, set the min and max values.
- Set whether the field is required or optional and add a default value if needed.
- Save the field. The custom field now appears on every entity of the selected type.
Supported areas
Custom fields can be added to projects, tasks, invoices, proposals, contracts, contacts (people and companies), forms, time entries, bookings, wiki pages, conversations, transactions, and custom pages. Each area manages its own set of custom fields, so a field added to projects appears on every project but doesn't affect tasks or invoices.
Available field types
- Text - free-form text input.
- Number - numeric values.
- Dropdown - single selection from predefined options.
- Multi-select - multiple selections from predefined options.
- Date - date picker.
- Checkbox - true/false toggle.
- URL/Link - clickable URLs to external resources.
- Email - email address field.
- Phone - phone number field.
- Currency - monetary values with currency formatting.
- Rating - star-based rating.
- Contacts - links to team members or contacts in your workspace.
- Slider - numeric value on a sliding scale.
- Range - minimum and maximum value pair.
Where custom fields appear
Custom fields show up on entity detail pages alongside built-in fields. You can also use them as filter and sort criteria in list views. For example, projects can be filtered by a "Client Industry" dropdown, or tasks can be sorted by a "Priority Score" number field. Custom fields work the same way as built-in fields across the interface, including in filters, sorting, and reports.
Custom fields on templates
Custom fields carry over when a template is applied. If you set custom field values on a project template, every new project created from that template starts with those values pre-filled. The same applies to task templates, invoice templates, and any other area that supports templates.
How to reorder custom fields
- Go to Settings > Custom fields.
- Select the area whose fields you want to reorder.
- Drag the fields into your preferred order. The new order is reflected everywhere the fields appear, including detail pages and list view columns.
